AquaReg present at the IX Forum of the Marine Resources and Aquaculture of Galicia
Salvador Guerrero, Project participant of the Aqua By-products Project presented a Poster in the Forum, carried out in October 10-11 in O Grove, Galicia

The title of the poster was Aquaculture Waste Generation in Galicia" and included the following information:

Introduction

This work has been carried out in cooperation with the BMW and Trøndelag regions, in the frame of the AquaLink Project entitled Aquaculture By-Products", belonging to the Aquareg Programme, co-financed by the EU.

In order to facilitate information exchange between aquaculture waste producers and managers the creation of a common data base between the three regions was a priority. Through this database, access to real or potential solutions available related with aquaculture waste production and management is possible.

Methodology

Information in Galicia was obtained by gathering the data provided by the producers associations (through questionnaires and interviews) together with that available at the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime affaires of the Galicia Government.

A database was created including the waste producing entities (fish farms, mussels rafts, fishermens guilds, crustaceans holding facilities, depuration plants, etc), together with the waste managers and re-users and the regulations applicable at a regional, national and European level.

Results

The list of waste managers has been made following the guidelines of the Regional Ministry for the Environment and Sustainable Development (www.siam-cma.org), according to a data base related with environmental legislation (AMBILEX), where wastes are classified regarding their impact on the environment.

In November 2005 the first Seminar on Aquaculture waste management and by-products was held in CETMAR (Vigo- Galicia).

Several presentations about fish and mollusc aquaculture by-products and methods for treatment and re-use of waste were performed.

The web site http://www.aquabyproducts.com was also introduced to the audience and the possibilities and information available on this open access and free web site where explained thoroughly.
