“Socioeconomic Diversification in Coastal Communities: Innovative Alternatives in Fisheries, Shellfish Gathering and Aquaculture”
The AquaReg SEAWO-MEN Project has organised an International Conference entitled "Socioeconomic Diversification in Coastal Communities: Innovative Alternatives in Fisheries, Shellfish Gathering and Aquaculture" to be held at in Vigo, Spain on 3 and 4 May. Programme, registration 'on line' and other useful information can be found at (http://www.diverpesca.org/)
The Conference is organized by the CETMAR, lead partner of the SEAWO-MEN project, whose main objective is the settlement of a multilevel network for small scale fishing and shellfish gathering professionals in the three Aquareg regions, focused on: fisherwomen and fishermen learning and interrelationship; exchange of experiences for promoting business initiatives and entrepreneurship; exchange of skills and capabilities in terms of production, organization, and marketing; assessment and implementation of new fields related to the activity.
During the last years, diversification strategies for the artisanal fishery sector led into a number of projects and entrepreneurial initiatives through most coastal zones. Some of them are intended for the improvement of the productive and commercial aspects of the fishery activity while some others look for new organizational models or for the development of new activities related with tourism. Many of these initiatives are already yielding social and economic benefits that can be taken as good examples for other communities. The cases of some initiatives that are facing legal barriers or those that have failed because of an inappropriate orientation are also examples for discussion and learning.
The Conference will be a platform for public administrations, stakeholders in the fishing sector, the scientific community and the society in general to debate about the evolution of the running projects and activities as well as the short and medium term goals in socioeconomic diversification. The design and content of the Conference is oriented to combine the global issues with the practical presentation of initiatives and experiences by fishermen and fisherwomen throughout Europe. Speeches will include also public representatives at European, national and regional level and experts from the business and research sectors.
For programme, registration and updated information please visit the Conference Website www.diverpesca.org.
