OPEL Builds on Success
 | | Cod in culture. | The OPEL subproject has been successful in its application for further funding until 30th June 2007.
A key challenge to successful development of the cod farming industry is to supply sufficient numbers of high quality juvenile fish for ongrowing at sea, cost effectively. Phase one of the OPEL project succeeded in establishing bilateral information exchange which resulted in significant advancements in automating live food production, optimising water quality conditions during larviculture and reducing production costs. Having addressed a number of fundamental difficulties in cod larviculture, phase two of OPEL aims to continue the valuable information exchange partnership between Fosen Aquasenter and MRI Carna and to extend this partnership with Isodro Del la Cal in Galicia..
Fosen Aquasenter and MRI Carna recently invested in the latest version of AquaOptimas self cleaning larval tank. This tank is designed to slowly mechanically clean the floor of the tank using a rotating cleaning arm. A previous model of the self cleaning tank was successfully trialed on pollack larvae in Isidro del la Cal under the AquaReg Poltank project. They reported survival rates of between 4.3% and 5.3% among pollack larvae reared using conventional flow through tanks compared with 9.6-12.8% among larvae reared in self cleaning larval tanks supplied with water from a water reuse system. The project will compare the use of these self cleaning tanks by assessing survival and growth rates with the aim of developing standard operational procedures for larval rearing.
The extension will also allow the participants to investigate the production of juvenile cod year round, by comparing performance of seasonal batches produced i.e. is there a significant difference in survival and growth of cod during the winter/ spring/ summer or autumn. This work is essential in establishing commercial viability. A suite of water quality parameters will be routinely measured during larviculture. These include, temperature, salinity, pH, redox potential, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, carbon dioxide and total viable counts.
The participants will also initiate a tri-lateral information exchange network between Isidro del la Cal, Fosen Aquasenter and MRI Carna. The bilateral information exchange network already established between Fosen Aquasenter and MRI Carna, during phase one of OPEL proved valuable in a number of key areas to both partners.
Following from the success of the general recirculation workshop held in July 2006
between three hosts, including MRI Carna, this project aims to host another workshop focusing on water recirculation for marine finfish. Key husbandry and managerial staff from all three facilities will attend the workshop along with other national and international delegates to exchange information on water reuse systems and operating of self-cleaning tanks. Staff from Isidro will spend time working at the MRI Carna to gain hands-on experience of operating a pilot commercial scale marine recirculation unit.
