Welcome AquaReg's new manager
Sigurd Bjørgo is the new Programme Manager of the international AquaReg marine co-operation between the three regions Galicia (Spain), Border, Midland and Western (Ireland) and Trøndelag (Norway).

Last summer Geir Tevasvold decided to steer a course to the Norway Seafood Association (NSL), after three years as AquaReg Programme Manager. At the same time, NSLs assistant director Sigurd Bjørgo, was looking for new opportunities. He found the challenges of continuing Geir Tevasvolds excellent international leadership attractive.

The winning recipe
This summer Sør-Trøndelag County Council hired Sigurd Bjørgo as AquaRegs new Programme Manager. His priority number one will be to make sure that the four prolonged AquaReg projects will come to a successful completion like the previous AquaReg projects have done.
- I will try to follow up the winning recipe that Geir Tevasvold and the excellent partnership have become over the past three years. As a former partner in the AquaReg-financed project Aquaculture By-Product Networks, I had my first look into the exciting AquaReg programme and how it worked. I will try my best to continue Geirs non-bureaucratic but professional leadership, says Sigurd Bjørgo.
Luckily, Bjørgo and Geir Tevasvold know each other well. Situated in the same town, Bjørgo will have the opportunity to use his predecessor as a mentor when necessary.

Bjørgo's background
Sigurd Bjørgo was born and raised within the Norwegian coastal tradition. As a child he lived close to the longest fjord in the world, the more than 200 kilometres long Sognefjorden in the western part of Norway. Therefore it was not unexpected that young Bjørgo took University College degrees in aquaculture and economics. These studies were combined with hard work on salmon breeding farms in Norway and the Faroe Islands. After that he started to work in local trade and cultural development in the small coastal municipality of Solund. For the past seven years Sigurd Bjørgo has been the assistant director of The Norwegian Seafood Association, the hardworking organisation for the Norwegian seafood industry. Bjørgo has been the federation's specialist on salmon.
- But I also have a really strong interest in traditional fisheries, Bjørgo says.

New ideas are welcome
The Programme Managers job gives Bjørgo the opportunity to participate in the development of well functional international networks with the aim and capacity of strengthening the marine activities in coastal communities. His new employer also gives him an opportunity to get to know his own region even better.
- Along with a strong focus on bringing the four prolonged projects to a successful completion, the last AquaReg programme year will bring on a focus on how we can use our fantastic partnership to develop new co-operations in the coming Interreg IV programme period. The AquaReg partnerships have already shown their ability to find good solutions to common challenges in coastal areas. It would be foolish not to make use of the partnership's vast store of knowledge, results and experiences to further exploit the possibilities and development in the coastal activities that are so vital to our regions, says Bjørgo.
